Learning Literacy

Genre

Students identify whether a text is fiction or nonfiction and learn how genre helps readers understand a story or topic.

Comprehension

Readers think about what they read by asking questions such as:

  • What was interesting?

  • What surprised me?

  • Do I understand the text?

Vocabulary

Students explore word patterns and word parts to improve reading and vocabulary skills.
Example: gnaw begins with a silent g and contains the –aw pattern.

Fluency

Readers practice reading smoothly, accurately, and with expression so their reading sounds natural.

Phonics & Word Study

Students learn how adding endings like –s, –ed, and –ing changes verbs. Base Word: spray

  • Add –ssprays

  • Add –edsprayed

  • Add –ingspraying

Growing Together

Each day, students can explore one literacy skill connected to their reading lesson. As they continue learning together, they will practice patience, persistence, and confidence on their literacy journey.
